What is the Ivy League?
Originally, the Ivy League referred to an athletic conference consisting of eight private colleges, but today, it refers to more than just athletics. These eight schools are all located in the Northeast and boast centuries of history, tradition, and prestige. Today, people refer to the Ivy League schools as extremely competitive, renowned universities with a high-quality education. As stated previously, eight private schools make up the Ivy League: Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University. Each of these schools varies in size and all have an acceptance rate of less than twelve percent. We will talk about each Ivy League school more in-depth, next.
Brown University is a private institution that was founded in 1764. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 7,160 and is located in Providence, Rhode Island, with a campus size of 146 acres. At Brown, tuition and fees cost $60,696, and room and board cost $15,908. All students are required to live on campus for their first six semesters with housing options including traditional singles, doubles, triples, and suites. Additionally, Brown is an NCAA Division I school and has over 400 student organizations.

Another Ivy League school is Columbia University, located in New York City. It was founded in 1754 and has a total undergraduate enrollment of 6,245. The campus size is 36 acres and includes three undergraduate schools, as well as a number of graduate schools. More than 90% of students live on campus and Columbia offers a range of student activities including 28 Greek chapters. Tuition and fees cost $64,380 and room and board cost $14,970. Like Brown, Columbia is also an NCAA Division 1 school.

Cornell University is located in Ithaca, New York, and was founded in 1865. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 15,043 with a campus size of 745 acres. Cornell has more than 1,000 student organizations and a thriving Greek life. Additionally, first-year students live together on north campus and Cornell offers housing options for upperclassmen. At Cornell, tuition and fees cost $59,316, and room and board cost $15,846. Cornell is also an NCAA Division I school with 35 varsity teams.

Located in Hanover, New Hampshire, is Dartmouth College, founded in 1769. Dartmouth has a total undergraduate enrollment of 4,459 and has a campus size of 237 acres. More than 90% of students live on campus and approximately 60% of students are members of Greek organizations. At Dartmouth, tuition and fees cost $59,458 and room and board cost $17,022. Dartmouth also utilizes the quarter-based academic calender. Like the rest of the Ivy Leagues, Dartmouth is an NCAA Divison I school.

Ranked number two in the 2021 edition of Best Colleges in National Universities is Harvard University, founded in 1636. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 6,755 and has a campus size of 5,076 acres. Freshmen live at the center of campus, and upperclassmen live in twelve undergraduate houses. Harvard is made up of 13 schools and institutions including a business school, medical school, school of engineering, etc. Tuition and fees cost $54,002, and room and board cost $18,389. Again, Harvard is also an NCAA Division 1 school that competes in the Ivy League.

Princeton University was founded in 1746 and located in Princeton, New Jersey with a campus size of 600 acres. Ranked number one in the 2021 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, Princeton has a total undergraduate enrollment of 5,422. Princeton offers a number of events, activities, and organizations, and students live in one of the six residential colleges. Tuition and fees cost $53,890 and room and board cost $17,820. Princeton is also an NCAA Division I school and is well known for its strong men’s and women’s lacrosse teams.

University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) was founded in 1740 and is located in Philadelphia. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 10,019 and has a campus size of 299 acres. UPenn offers housing options in more than ten college houses, but a number of students live off-campus. The school also offers numerous clubs and organizations, and more than 25% of students are involved in Greek life. Tuition and fees cost $60,042 and room and board cost $16,784. The Penn Quakers have more than 25 NCAA Division I teams.

Last but not least is Yale University. Yale University was founded in 1701 and is located in New Haven, Connecticut. The total undergraduate enrollment is 6,092 and has a campus size of 373 acres. At Yale, students are assigned to one of the fourteen residential colleges during their time. Yale also has many student activities/organizations including their known drama and music programs. Tuition and fees cost $57,700 and room and board cost $17,200. Yale is also an NCAA Division I school and has a football rivalry with Harvard.

All eight of the Ivy League schools are some of the most prestigious universities in the US. Standing out is a great way to increase your chances of getting in since these schools receive a high number of applications and have low acceptance rates.
