Top 3 Graduate Programs for Artificial Intelligence

Updated: Jan 13, 2021

After finishing an undergraduate program for artificial intelligence, you have a few options: Get a job or internship, take a gap year, conduct research, find other employment and volunteer opportunities, and apply to graduate school. If you complete an undergraduate program and fulfill the university’s requirements, you will earn a Bachelor’s Degree. Entry-level requirements for most careers in artificial intelligence require a Bachelor’s Degree. However, if you’re aiming for upper management and senior-level positions, additional education and work experience is essential. Through a graduate program in artificial intelligence or computer science, you can earn a Master’s Degree, PhD, or certificate.

Some of the tests used in the admissions process are the TOEFL iBT, IELTS, and GRE. TOEFL iBT and IELTS assess English skills. The GRE (Graduate Records Examination) assesses math and English skills similar to standardized tests like the SAT and ACT. Depending on the graduate program, these tests may be required only in specific circumstances. These are some colleges with the best graduate programs for artificial intelligence.

1. Carnegie Mellon University’s Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Innovation

According to the U.S. News and World Report, Carnegie Mellon has the best graduate program for artificial intelligence. Carnegie Mellon is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with an acceptance rate of about 10% in the Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Innovation (MSAII). Most qualified applicants have a bachelor’s degree in computer science. The minimum TOEFL iBT is at least 100 (with sub-scores of 25 and above) and IELTS score of at least 7.5. Although Carnegie Mellon doesn’t have a minimum GRE, applicants are still required to submit their scores. The minimum undergraduate GPA is a 3.0. The application requires strong academics, stellar letters of recommendation, and eloquent essays and statements, which makes it a highly competitive graduate program.

2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Electrical Engineering & Computer Science Graduate Program

According to the U.S. News and World Report, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has the second-best graduate program for artificial intelligence. MIT is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts with approximately 6990 graduate students enrolled in the 2019-2020 academic year. Although MIT doesn’t have a graduate program specifically for artificial intelligence, students can choose to study artificial intelligence while being in this graduate program. The Electrical Engineering & Computer Science department is the largest in MIT’s school of engineering with approximately 700 graduate students. International students must take the TOEFL iBT and earn a score of 100 or above. If the TOEFL iBT is unavailable in your country, you can also take the IELTS exam and score a 7 or above. These exams can be waived if you have been in the U.S. for two years or your country’s primary language is English. MIT’s graduate program is extremely competitive, and the application requires strong academics, stellar letters of recommendation, and eloquent statements and essays.

3. Stanford University’s Artificial Intelligence Graduate Program

According to the U.S. News and World Report, Stanford University has the third-best graduate program for artificial intelligence. Stanford is located in Stanford, California with approximately 7,971 graduate students enrolled in the 2019-2020 academic year. The prerequisites for the Artificial Intelligence Graduate Program are C/C++ programming experience (Object-oriented systems design/CS108 and above) and a bachelor’s degree with an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or above. Some recommended courses to take before pursuing this graduate program are linear algebra (Math104, Math 113, CS205L or equivalent courses) and statistics and probability (CS 109, STATS116 or equivalent courses). During the graduate program, you should take courses that match your future career goals while still completing the necessary courses to earn the certificate. You must obtain a B or better in each course in order to remain eligible for the program. The time to complete the program is approximately 1-2 years on average with a maximum of 3 years. Stanford’s Artificial Intelligence Graduate Program is extremely competitive, and the application requires strong academics, stellar letters of recommendation, and eloquent statements and essays.

Although these graduate programs are highly competitive, they offer various benefits including a higher salary, more job opportunities, and improved connections.
