Finding the Right Major for You

School passes by faster than you may expect. Before you know it, the weight of college applications and deciding your major is upon you. With a variety of majors that lead to different jobs, you may get overwhelmed with making the right decision. So what can you do to prepare for it?

Identify Your Strengths

To take a step towards choosing the right major, you have to figure out what you excel in. Are you good at writing? If so, you might want to look into journalism or marketing. If you are good at math, accounting or engineering may be the right fit for you. Taking time to understand your talents will benefit you in the long run and help you reach your goal, whether it is earning your degree or having your dream job.

Identify Your Interests and Passions

Identifying your interests is especially important, as your major leads you to a career that you will have for the majority of your life. Regretting taking a route to a job instead of enjoying it and wanting to go to work every day is a huge worry for many people. To prevent this, explore different activities. If you think psychology is interesting, take a psychology class in school! If computer science is a topic you might want to have involved in your job, find ways you can start to learn about it!

Money and Employability

Money and employability are two things that are very important to most people in finding a job, and they both go hand in hand. It is smart to go for a job that is in high demand, such as a physician’s assistant, software developer, or nurse practitioner (these are the top 3 jobs of 2021 according to U.S. News), as they make more money and there are more employment opportunities.

The Big Questions

Deciding on a major or career path is a huge deal, but there are questions you should ask yourself to understand what works best for you. Are you prepared to take on the workload this major entails? Are you satisfied with where this major will take you? Years from now, will you still enjoy this job? And the biggest question you should ask yourself: is this major for you? So before declaring your college major, take time and think about what career makes you want to go to work in the morning and what career makes you happy and encouraged.
