Five Websites All High Schoolers Should Know About

Updated: Nov 30, 2020

For many people, the rigorous courses and challenges you encounter in high school can result in stress and struggles. However, dealing with this problem doesn’t have to be so hard. Below is a list of resources that you can use to help you succeed in your academic life.

Are you looking for summaries and details of a book you are reading in your English class? If so, SparkNotes is the perfect tool for you! With this website, you can easily access a wide array of books with character details, chapter summaries, and mini-quizzes to assess your knowledge. On top of that, SparkNotes offers references to key themes of each book, as well as quotes and chapters that highlight those themes. Both the app and website are free, meaning that you don’t have to pay for those bothersome membership plans. However, it is important that you still read the book as SparkNotes will most likely not cover everything that you are expected to know. In addition to reading, Spark Notes also offers lessons on different topics such as math, chemistry, American government, computer science, drama, and more. If you are looking for a straightforward and accessible guide for your assignments, I strongly suggest using SparkNotes.

Are you stuck on a math problem and just can’t figure out how to get the right answer? Recognized as a “camera calculator” and one of the best math applications in the market, Photomath offers a simple and easy way to get instantaneous solutions to your math problems as well as the work that goes along with it to best help you understand the material. All you have to do is take a picture of the problem you are given, and let Photomath do the rest! In just a couple of seconds, Photomath will scan the problem and find the solution that goes along with it. It also allows you to view the steps that were taken to solve it. Keep in mind that you should always attempt to solve the problems before you turn to Photomath for help. This application should be used for learning, and not as a short cut! Photomath offers a free basic plan as well as a premium plan in which you can get more in-depth explanations on how to solve certain problems. There are also animated tutorials for those who are more into visual learning. As you advance into higher-level mathematics, Photomath will become more essential, so download it and say goodbye to all of the time you have spent searching up a problem on Youtube.

You have most likely heard of Quizlet at least once in your life, especially since it is a tool that is highly recognized by teachers and tutors. Quizlet is an app and website that is widely used for memorization. Quizlet allows you to set terms and definitions so that you can have digital flashcards to study. On top of that, Quizlet also provides different minigames to make the learning fun, such as “Gravity” and “Match.” With the premium plan, you can access study guides created by experts and experienced educators, study offline, scan in documents, access different types of text formatting, create personalized study plans, add pictures and videos to your study guides, and more. It does also offer a free plan that provides...

You will most likely need to write an essay at some point in your academic career. Whether it is persuasive or expository, you will need to cite your sources as you research facts and evidence to support your claims. EasyBib is a free website that allows students to instantly cite websites, books, journals, and more. On top of that, you can run a plagiarism and grammar check to ensure that your paper is 100% original and error-free. Keep in mind that Easybib may miss a few key details in the citation, so it is important to make sure that you know how to implement those details. EasyBib is a necessity to have in high school because it will make citing sources and perfecting your paper much easier.

When writing an essay, it is easy to let the small mistakes slip out of your hands. Grammarly is an online website and extension that allows you to check your essay for grammatical mistakes. It also provides a list of synonyms that you can replace certain words to fit with the tone you are trying to incorporate. However, it is important to note that just like all applications, Grammarly is not perfect. It is easy for Grammarly to misinterpret what you are trying to say some of the time, resulting in it suggesting invalid corrections. My best advice would be to use Grammarly to check over your grammar and spelling and have someone read over your essay to make sure that the tone, clarity, engagement, and delivery are where you want them to be.

Although high school may not be easy, being able to recognize and utilize the right resources may make it more relaxed. I highly recommend making use of the resources I listed above, especially since they are all easy and free to use with helpful guides on a wide variety of subjects.
