Scholarships for African American Seniors

Students of African American descent have constantly been behind in the race toward generational wealth. So to bridge that gap, these scholars work hard in school to get the opportunity to go to college, but when they get there, they cannot pay for it. To pay for it, they need as much financial aid and scholarships as they can. With that said, here are a few scholarships that will be very beneficial to African American students.

American Association of Blacks in Energy Scholarship

This scholarship caters to African American students who seek to enter college. These students can obtain this scholarship if they decide to major in a business or STEM, and with this scholarship comes $5000 toward their schooling. With this association, they seek to increase the number of minorities like African Americans in the field of energy, so they want to help put these STEM scholars through college. The requirements suggest that these high school seniors must have a 3.0 GPA or over throughout their high school career. If the student meets the category, they can immediately start the application process and get it in by March 15, 2022. Check out this link for more information and the application.

Ron Brown Scholarship

This scholarship entails that African American high school seniors can earn $40,000 over their four years of college in $10,000 increments. The foundation recruits the cream of the crop when it comes to talent, but also students who demonstrate financial need. Students also are not restricted to specific major categories, which means that if you want to major in the arts or even neuroscience, you are not bound by the terms of your scholarship. Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship

JRF provides financial aid of up to $30,000 over four years to students who demonstrate need and succeed through their application process. They also mentor these students and mold them into leaders by developing skills in leadership, serving others, and navigating college life. These students all have to attend accredited 4-year universities or bachelor’s degrees and within the foundation are additional programs meant to connect students to study abroad and post-grad education. This is a chance that African American students with financial needs cannot pass up. Check out the link to apply and learn more:

The Gates Scholarship

The Gates Scholarship is a full-ride scholarship covering tuition, room and board, books, and transportation. It is offered to minority students who are eligible for the Pell Grant when applying for college and fulfill a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or above on a 4.0 scale. This scholarship also includes students entering an accredited university when they graduate the next year. The application goes through several phases and opens up in July. The first phase of the application is due September 15, and the Semifinalists are chosen to progress in the application process in December. The American Chemical Scholar Society Scholarship

This scholarship gives up to $5000 yearly to scholars at accredited universities who study chemistry or chemical-related disciplines. The American Chemical Scholar Society seeks to increase the amount of chemistry-related bachelor’s degree graduates. To do that, they give these students the tools they need to pay for college. The application opens on November 1 and is due March 1. For more information, check out the link and good luck:

Paying for college is something many students fear, especially those of African American descent who don't come from much. For them, scholarships like these can be the difference between whether they go to college or not. College may not be the path everyone takes in the future, but if you are an African American student who chooses this path, apply for as many scholarships as you can.
